Using embeddings from a fine-tuned model, advisors sat 39.9% closer in cosine distance to their students' writing than a random author in the same field. Two open-source encoders reproduced the effect at smaller scale, 12.6% and 14.5%. Even \"academic siblings\" - two students of the same advisor who may never have met - wrote 30.4% more similarly than chance across 8,360 pairs, regardless of institution, while pairs who shared only a school and a field showed almost no similarity at all.\n\nThat matters because these detection systems are already being used to flag ghostwritten and AI-generated papers, and the errors aren't random. In a closed-set attribution test on the same corpus, the system mistook a true author for their own advisor or academic sibling 11 times more often than chance would predict.
