Fortune's reporting does not say whether Microsoft would build the handheld itself or hand the job to a manufacturer such as Asus.\n\nThat question has a recent precedent. Xbox partnered with Asus on the Xbox Ally devices, which ran a modified version of Windows 11 with an Xbox mode switched on. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has also described Project Helix as a \"family of devices,\" which suggests the next Xbox may not be a single box.\n\nThe 2028 date is the part with the most context behind it. The Xbox Series X and Series S launched in November 2020, so a holiday 2028 console would land about eight years later. The previous gap, from the Xbox One in November 2013 to the Series X and S, was seven years.","[\"xbox\",\"microsoft\",\"handheld\",\"consoles\"]","2026-10-20T18:45:39.000Z","2026-10-20T19:17:44.301Z","2026-10-20T19:17:44.476Z","published",null,[24],{"id":25,"reviewer":26,"round":27,"reason":28,"status":29},"editor-r1","editor",1,"Name Fortune as the source of the 2027 and 2028 dates instead of the vague 'a business magazine', and cut the speculative analysis (portable play as 'not a side project', a longer wait giving a handheld-first rollout 'room' to define 'family') that the reporting doesn't support, keeping only the Series X\u002FS and Xbox One gap math as context.","resolved","gaming",[32,33,34,35],"xbox","microsoft","handheld","consoles",[37],{"name":38,"url":39},"The Verge","https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002Fnews\u002F1014666\u002Fxbox-project-helix-launch-2028-rumor",0,{"sections":42},[43,48,53,58,63,68,73,78,83,88,93,98,101,106],{"name":44,"slug":45,"count":46,"latest_published_at":47},"AI","ai",7045,"2026-10-20T21:25:22.000Z",{"name":49,"slug":50,"count":51,"latest_published_at":52},"Security","security",1021,"2026-10-20T20:25:00.000Z",{"name":54,"slug":55,"count":56,"latest_published_at":57},"Policy","policy",552,"2026-10-20T22:20:11.000Z",{"name":59,"slug":60,"count":61,"latest_published_at":62},"Deals","deals",538,"2026-10-20T20:17:07.000Z",{"name":64,"slug":65,"count":66,"latest_published_at":67},"Hardware","hardware",272,"2026-10-20T22:38:24.000Z",{"name":69,"slug":70,"count":71,"latest_published_at":72},"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",257,"2026-10-20T22:30:00.000Z",{"name":74,"slug":75,"count":76,"latest_published_at":77},"Science","science",209,"2026-10-20T21:02:53.000Z",{"name":79,"slug":80,"count":81,"latest_published_at":82},"Startups","startups",137,"2026-10-20T22:24:15.000Z",{"name":84,"slug":85,"count":86,"latest_published_at":87},"Software","software",134,"2026-10-20T14:57:15.000Z",{"name":89,"slug":90,"count":91,"latest_published_at":92},"Dev Tools","dev-tools",119,"2026-10-20T13:00:00.000Z",{"name":94,"slug":95,"count":96,"latest_published_at":97},"General","general",89,"2026-10-20T21:30:24.000Z",{"name":99,"slug":30,"count":100,"latest_published_at":18},"Gaming",82,{"name":102,"slug":103,"count":104,"latest_published_at":105},"Reviews","reviews",38,"2026-10-20T12:00:00.000Z",{"name":107,"slug":108,"count":109,"latest_published_at":110},"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
