WindBorne just turned balloon-based weather data into a near $50 million line item for the US Air Force.
The Silicon Valley startup builds weather balloons and runs the data they collect through AI models to generate forecasts. The US Air Force has now contracted WindBorne for that balloon-sourced weather data, in a deal reported at almost $50 million. The deal was reported October 12, 2026. Further technical or operational details of the contract were not disclosed.
Military weather forecasting has traditionally relied on satellites and government-run sensor networks, so a contract this size suggests the Air Force is willing to pay a private company for an alternative data pipeline. It also reads as a bet that AI can turn sparse, mobile balloon readings into forecasts useful enough for military planning, not just a research curiosity.
Whether this becomes the first of several defense contracts for commercial weather-data startups, or stays a one-off, is the more interesting story than the dollar figure.
