Its authors argue that most current harm-auditing methods for generative AI rely on three shaky assumptions: that harm can be defined before any real interaction happens, that it applies uniformly across broad demographic groups, and that it stays fixed over time. Personalized systems break all three, the authors say, because their behavior shifts as they build a history with each individual user. The paper also warns that trying to fix this by having AI systems learn what counts as harmful directly from users would push extra labor and privacy risk onto marginalized people who are already more likely to be harmed.

This matters because the audit playbook most AI labs use, benchmark tests and red-teaming against a frozen model, was built for tools that treat every user the same. As chatbots add memory and long-term personalization, a system can pass every static safety test and still cause harm that only shows up after weeks of tailored interaction. The paper's proposed fix is a shift from one-time evaluation to ongoing infrastructure that lets harm be defined and re-defined as it happens, by the people experiencing it.

That's a reasonable diagnosis, but the paper stops short of describing a working audit tool. It offers design directions, not a product. Turning ongoing articulation of harm into something a safety team can actually run before shipping a model remains, for now, somebody else's problem.","["ai-auditing","ai-safety","personalization","generative-ai"]","2026-08-18T04:00:00.000Z","2026-08-18T14:38:16.501Z","2026-08-18T14:38:28.208Z","published",null,[],"ai",[26,27,28,29],"ai-auditing","ai-safety","personalization","generative-ai",[31
arXiv cs.AI","https://arxiv.org/abs/2608.14692",0
37,41,45,50,55,60,65,70,75,79,84,89,94,99
"AI",3293,"2026-08-20T04:00:00.000Z
"Security","security",435
"Policy","policy",210,"2026-08-19T09:32:27.000Z
"Deals","deals",179,"2026-06-29T20:02:07.000Z
"Hardware","hardware",140,"2026-08-19T18:25:42.000Z
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",95,"2026-08-18T16:05:00.000Z
"Science","science",90,"2026-08-19T18:41:02.000Z
"Software","software",73,"2026-08-18T07:51:50.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",69
"Startups","startups",47,"2026-08-19T19:13:46.000Z
"Gaming","gaming",41,"2026-07-09T04:00:00.000Z
"General","general",33,"2026-08-18T22:18:13.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",20,"2026-06-24T12:00:01.000Z
"How-To","how-to",6,"2026-06-16T09:00:00.000Z"]
