watchOS 27 reshuffles core Apple Watch habits, and not every change here is an upgrade.
Apple released watchOS 27 on September 14, and the changes reach far beyond the new Series 12 and Ultra 4 models. Siri now has a dedicated app that syncs every conversation across devices through iCloud, alongside a new watch face built around the Smart Stack. Pressing the Digital Crown now opens a dynamic app grid instead of the old honeycomb layout, and a new Tap gesture opens whatever widget is highlighted in the Smart Stack. Apple also deleted Walkie-Talkie entirely, it cannot be reinstalled, while Series 12 and Ultra 4 owners get eventual access to Live Rewind, a feature that transcribes the last 15 seconds of nearby speech.
The update trades a familiar shortcut for an AI-era feature. Double-pressing the Crown used to summon the App Switcher for force-quitting apps, but now it opens the new app grid, with the switcher exiled to a different gesture until watchOS 27.2 ships later this year. That is Apple sacrificing muscle memory for a feature, Live Rewind, that most current owners cannot even use yet. Smaller changes, like merging Find Devices, Find Items, and Find People into one Find My app and freeing Workout Buddy from needing a paired iPhone, are the kind of unglamorous fixes that matter more day to day than any new AI face.
Killing Walkie-Talkie outright while reserving the showiest new gesture for hardware most people do not own yet feels less like polish and more like a company testing next year's watch on this year's customers.
