Walmart is taking preorders for the Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution Delta Reign Elite Trainer Box at $113.99, which is $23.90 less than Amazon's lowest price of $137.89.
As of October 16, that Walmart price also undercuts the box's estimated market price of $118.85 by $4.86. The lowest listings on TCGplayer, a marketplace for cards and sealed products, sit at $118.60. Preorders opened at around $140 on Amazon about a week earlier.
An Elite Trainer Box, or ETB, is the boxed set Pokémon sells for its trading card game (TCG). This one holds nine Delta Reign booster packs, a full-art foil Kyogre promo card, 65 card sleeves, 40 Energy cards, seven dice, a plastic coin, six dividers, a collector's box, a player's guide and a Pokémon TCG Live code card. By our arithmetic, $113.99 works out to $12.67 per pack before counting the extras, against $15.32 at Amazon's price.
The "save over $20" framing mostly reflects how high Amazon's price is. Against the market estimate, Walmart is about 4% lower. The expansion has over 135 cards, and the draw for many buyers is the Special Illustration Rares, the scarce full-art cards collectors hunt, such as Mega Rayquaza ex, Raikou ex and Mega Golurk ex. Packs are random, so a box buys odds at those cards, not the cards themselves. The deal write-up pointed to Japanese versions of those cards, sold as singles on TCGplayer, as a preview.
Treat the numbers with some care. They come from one deal write-up, which included no comment from Walmart or The Pokémon Company. It does not give a release date or say how long the Walmart price will hold.
The three prices span $23.90, from $113.99 at Walmart to $137.89 at Amazon. Amazon's price accounts for $19.04 of that spread over the market estimate, and Walmart's for only $4.86.
