The headset itself drops from $499 to $399.20. Controllers and base stations aren't included. The old $999 full bundle is gone, and there's no discount for it because it no longer exists. Left controller replacements are $119.20, replacement tethers run $103.20, and right controllers aren't listed for sale at all.\n\nThis isn't really new information so much as Valve finally saying it out loud. Designer Lawrence Yang signaled last year that the Index had stopped shipping, and Valve's own framing ties the exit to the recently launched Steam Frame headset taking its place. For a headset that reviewers called the best VR option at launch, this is a clearance sale, not a send-off.\n\nThe Index arrived in April 2019, tethered to a PC, just months before the original Oculus Quest made cordless VR the thing to want. Seven years on, buying a wired headset with no controllers included is less a cheap piece of history and more a reminder of how fast VR's defaults moved on.","[\"valve\",\"vr\",\"index vr\",\"steam frame\"]","2026-10-14T00:42:28.000Z","2026-10-14T01:39:38.130Z","2026-10-14T01:39:43.870Z","published",null,[24],{"id":25,"reviewer":26,"round":27,"reason":28,"status":29},"publisher-r1","publisher",1,"The dek and body promote the discontinued Index as a lead-in to Valve's \"Steam Frame\" flagship, but no such Valve product named \"Steam Frame\" has shipped or been confirmed, making this a fabricated\u002Funverifiable product claim that must be checked before publishing.","resolved","hardware",[32,33,34,35],"valve","vr","index vr","steam frame",[37],{"name":38,"url":39},"PCGamer","https:\u002F\u002Fwww.pcgamer.com\u002Fhardware\u002Fvr-hardware\u002Fvalve-is-clearing-out-its-discontinued-index-vr-headsets-if-you-want-a-cheap-piece-of-history\u002F",0,{"sections":42},[43,48,53,58,63,66,71,76,81,86,91,96,101,106],{"name":44,"slug":45,"count":46,"latest_published_at":47},"AI","ai",6990,"2026-10-13T20:09:54.000Z",{"name":49,"slug":50,"count":51,"latest_published_at":52},"Security","security",978,"2026-10-14T02:00:14.000Z",{"name":54,"slug":55,"count":56,"latest_published_at":57},"Policy","policy",505,"2026-10-13T22:48:12.000Z",{"name":59,"slug":60,"count":61,"latest_published_at":62},"Deals","deals",501,"2026-10-13T22:00:00.000Z",{"name":64,"slug":30,"count":65,"latest_published_at":18},"Hardware",252,{"name":67,"slug":68,"count":69,"latest_published_at":70},"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",213,"2026-10-14T00:44:32.000Z",{"name":72,"slug":73,"count":74,"latest_published_at":75},"Science","science",201,"2026-10-13T23:13:31.000Z",{"name":77,"slug":78,"count":79,"latest_published_at":80},"Startups","startups",132,"2026-10-13T21:15:00.000Z",{"name":82,"slug":83,"count":84,"latest_published_at":85},"Software","software",123,"2026-10-13T21:33:43.000Z",{"name":87,"slug":88,"count":89,"latest_published_at":90},"Dev Tools","dev-tools",116,"2026-10-13T16:20:18.000Z",{"name":92,"slug":93,"count":94,"latest_published_at":95},"General","general",77,"2026-10-13T22:42:18.000Z",{"name":97,"slug":98,"count":99,"latest_published_at":100},"Gaming","gaming",65,"2026-10-13T19:00:48.000Z",{"name":102,"slug":103,"count":104,"latest_published_at":105},"Reviews","reviews",36,"2026-10-13T18:00:00.000Z",{"name":107,"slug":108,"count":109,"latest_published_at":110},"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
