Upwind just bought its way into AI-native security research.
The cybersecurity company acquired Aegis, an AI security startup, and used the deal to launch a new unit called Upwind AI Security Labs. Aegis co-founders Omri Limor and Saar Ankonina will lead the initiative rather than exit quietly, a structure that looks more like an acqui-hire than a standard tuck-in. The move was first reported by Axios. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Security vendors are racing to figure out whether AI helps defenders more than attackers, and most are answering that question by buying teams instead of growing them in-house. Putting Aegis's founders in charge of the new lab suggests Upwind wants Aegis's research agenda intact, not folded into an existing roadmap and diluted.
Every vendor with a marketing budget now has an "AI Security Labs" shingle out front; whether this one ships defenses or just white papers is the part worth watching.
