They found that machine unlearning techniques, which are supposed to make a model forget specific information, often leave that knowledge intact once you ask in a different language or request the answer in a different tongue. Unlearning the fact everywhere at once is impractical, since scrubbing every language also damages the model's unrelated skills. So the researchers built COVER, a method that picks a smaller set of source languages to unlearn in, chosen to maximize how much that forgetting spreads to languages that never got direct treatment.\n\nThis matters because unlearning is the tool companies point to when they need to comply with a takedown request, a privacy ruling, or a correction, and most of that compliance work happens in English. If the same fact stays retrievable by switching languages, that compliance is cosmetic.
