A Ukrainian drone maker claims an autonomous quadcopter killed Russian troops in a 2024 field test.
The claim comes from Alexander Kokhanovskyy, CEO of Aero Center, who told New Scientist that the drones were pre‑programmed to fly to a front‑line sector and then switch to an AI‑driven mode that would engage any target. He said there was no video feed, and only human‑piloted drones sent afterward reported finding “a couple” of dead Russian soldiers. No other evidence, footage, or third‑party verification has been presented.
If true, the incident would mark a step toward fully autonomous lethal weapons, a development already raising ethical and legal questions. However, without independent data, the report adds little more than an unconfirmed anecdote to an ongoing debate about AI in warfare.
Skeptics note that wartime bragging has long outpaced hard proof, and this story is another example.
