It makes Nvidia's AI chips, along with chips for Apple, Broadcom, Qualcomm and a long list of automotive customers. Its highly automated fabs run on industrial machinery, and the electric motors in that machinery use permanent magnets made from rare-earth elements such as neodymium, dysprosium and terbium.

China holds the leverage here. The U.S. Geological Survey puts its share of global rare-earth mining at roughly 70%. The International Energy Agency says it controls around 90% of refining and about 95% of finished permanent magnets. In April 2025, Beijing put seven medium and heavy rare earths, and the magnets made from them, under export licensing that requires case-by-case approval. On October 9, 2025, it added five more rare earths, processing technology and equipment, and foreign-made products containing more than 0.1% Chinese-origin rare earths. That expansion was later suspended until November 10, 2026, and the suspension has now been extended by another 90 days.

A pause is not a repeal, which explains the outreach. Even with every other material in hand, a shortage of specialized motor components could complicate maintenance, repair or expansion of production equipment.

Motors without rare earths exist. Induction motors and switched-reluctance motors skip permanent magnets, and some permanent-magnet designs use ferrite instead. Each involves trade-offs in efficiency, size, power density, precision and control, and precision is the one a fab tool cares about most. So this looks less like a part swap and more like an engineering question.

The longer-term fix is slower. Taiwan's government is backing the Industrial Technology Research Institute to build a pilot line within three years that could meet about 50% of domestic rare-earth demand. In February 2026, the Trump administration announced plans for a $12 billion critical minerals stockpile. Both are multi-year projects, while a motor redesign may be the quicker lever, if suppliers can match the precision TSMC needs before the next extension runs out.","["tsmc","rare-earths","export-controls","semiconductors"]","2026-10-22T13:45:00.000Z","2026-10-22T14:50:25.854Z","2026-10-22T14:50:26.106Z","published",null,[24
"editor-r1","editor",1,"The lede says TSMC is asking suppliers 'according to people familiar with the matter' as if The Revision had its own sourcing, when the claim comes from a Reuters report of October 22 (relayed by Tom's Hardware); name Reuters as the source and give the date, and keep the rest of the facts, the clean ending and the analysis as they are.","resolved","hardware",[32,33,34,35],"tsmc","rare-earths","export-controls","semiconductors",[37
Tom's Hardware","https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/semiconductors/tsmc-is-seeking-chipmaking-equipment-that-doesnt-contain-chinese-rare-earth-magnets-asks-suppliers-to-provide-alternative-motors-as-export-controls-threaten-fab-operations",0
43,48,53,58,63,67,72,77,82,87,92,97,102,107
"AI","ai",7062,"2026-10-22T17:00:39.000Z
"Security","security",1042,"2026-10-22T15:11:26.000Z
"Policy","policy",570,"2026-10-22T16:00:29.000Z
"Deals","deals",558,"2026-10-22T13:00:00.000Z
"Hardware",287,"2026-10-22T16:18:47.000Z
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",281,"2026-10-22T14:09:11.000Z
"Science","science",214,"2026-10-22T14:59:28.000Z
"Startups","startups",142,"2026-10-22T16:05:08.000Z
"Software","software",138,"2026-10-22T04:52:10.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",122,"2026-10-21T16:00:00.000Z
"General","general",96,"2026-10-22T16:00:00.000Z
"Gaming","gaming",86,"2026-10-22T13:17:59.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",38,"2026-10-20T12:00:00.000Z
"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
