President Donald Trump has called on AI data center builders to pay the communities around them a dividend, in a Truth Social post aimed at softening local opposition to new sites.
The post says data centers would be mandated not only to make their own electricity, as he has said before, but also to give or sell excess energy back to the local community. The stated aim is to offset energy-related price hikes, or even lower prices. A recently passed act already orders data centers to cover the cost of grid upgrades, so those bills do not land on local taxpayers. "Data Centers that were highly unpopular in a certain area have become extremely popular when a financial deal is struck," Trump wrote, closing with "MAKE DEALS, and get them built!!!"
How a mandate would be enforced, and what the dividend would look like, has not been spelled out. One reading of an electricity-focused post is that it could partly cover residents' rising power bills, but that is an inference, not something the post states.
The political logic is easy to see. Communities across the US have protested data centers over rising electricity costs, noise, water shortages, air pollution and deforestation, and the administration wants to stay ahead of China in AI. Local resistance is friction in that race.
Our read: the "make deals" language points toward negotiated, site-by-site arrangements rather than one national formula. And spare power only exists if a facility generates more than it uses, so the size of any benefit depends on details the post leaves out.
There is also a ceiling on what money can do. A dividend addresses only the economic side of the objections. Enormous water consumption, ecological damage and pollution remain major challenges, and a payout does not touch them.
