The feature currently requires a Tesla Powerwall 3 to work. Support for the older Powerwall 2 and Powerwall Plus is \"coming soon,\" according to Tesla, but isn't live yet. Tesla says the Model 3 and Model Y can extend home backup power past two days.\n\nThis isn't a first for the industry. Kia and GM already offer vehicle-to-home power on some models, and Nissan's Leaf supported vehicle-to-grid charging years before Tesla built out its own charging network. Tesla's advantage is volume: millions of Model 3s and Model Ys are already on the road, dwarfing the installed base of rival bidirectional-charging EVs.\n\nThe catch is the fine print: this only works if you've also bought a Powerwall 3, so don't expect your existing home battery setup to suddenly gain EV backup for free.","[\"tesla\",\"electric-vehicles\",\"home-backup\",\"batteries\"]","2026-10-06T20:37:54.000Z","2026-10-07T13:22:39.815Z","2026-10-07T13:22:43.884Z","published",null,[],"consumer-tech",[26,27,28,29],"tesla","electric-vehicles","home-backup","batteries",[31],{"name":32,"url":33},"The Verge","https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002Ftransportation\u002F1006193\u002Ftesla-model-3-model-y-powershare-home-backup",0,{"sections":36},[37,42,47,52,57,62,67,71,76,80,85,90,95,100],{"name":38,"slug":39,"count":40,"latest_published_at":41},"AI","ai",6374,"2026-10-07T18:30:57.000Z",{"name":43,"slug":44,"count":45,"latest_published_at":46},"Security","security",902,"2026-10-07T19:53:42.000Z",{"name":48,"slug":49,"count":50,"latest_published_at":51},"Policy","policy",473,"2026-10-07T18:23:21.000Z",{"name":53,"slug":54,"count":55,"latest_published_at":56},"Deals","deals",453,"2026-10-07T23:58:31.000Z",{"name":58,"slug":59,"count":60,"latest_published_at":61},"Hardware","hardware",221,"2026-10-07T21:19:54.000Z",{"name":63,"slug":64,"count":65,"latest_published_at":66},"Science","science",186,"2026-10-06T21:20:39.000Z",{"name":68,"slug":24,"count":69,"latest_published_at":70},"Consumer Tech",173,"2026-10-07T17:41:41.000Z",{"name":72,"slug":73,"count":74,"latest_published_at":75},"Software","software",112,"2026-10-07T18:10:00.000Z",{"name":77,"slug":78,"count":74,"latest_published_at":79},"Startups","startups","2026-10-07T23:36:57.000Z",{"name":81,"slug":82,"count":83,"latest_published_at":84},"Dev Tools","dev-tools",105,"2026-10-07T16:59:11.000Z",{"name":86,"slug":87,"count":88,"latest_published_at":89},"General","general",59,"2026-10-07T21:16:18.000Z",{"name":91,"slug":92,"count":93,"latest_published_at":94},"Gaming","gaming",56,"2026-10-07T12:00:00.000Z",{"name":96,"slug":97,"count":98,"latest_published_at":99},"Reviews","reviews",33,"2026-10-05T11:57:17.000Z",{"name":101,"slug":102,"count":103,"latest_published_at":104},"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
