Tech giants sign Trump-brokered pact to self-regulate AI

Six AI leaders signed a voluntary "Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities" with no enforcement mechanism beyond their own promises.

Six of AI's most powerful executives just promised to grade their own homework.

The White House released full details Tuesday of an AI safety accord first announced by President Trump a day earlier. The document, called the Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities, was posted online by presidential advisor David Sacks. It carries signatures from Google's Sundar Pichai, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI's Greg Brockman, xAI's Elon Musk, and Nvidia's Jensen Huang. The signatories describe it as "morally binding," language that signals intent without creating any legal obligation.

This is self-regulation, not regulation. There's no regulator, no penalty clause, and no independent body checking whether any of these companies actually follow through. It's also a familiar pattern: promise good behavior publicly, and let the pledge do the work actual rules would otherwise do.

Call it a handshake agreement among competitors who each have billions of reasons to keep building fast anyway.
