They fed a Vision Transformer classifier different mixes of real and synthetic images and tested it only on real, unseen satellite photos. The best setup, which balanced the DDPM-generated images across both damage categories, pushed overall accuracy from 84% to 88%. More strikingly, it raised balanced accuracy from 67% to 81% and lifted recall on the underrepresented not-bombed class from 41% to 69%.\n\nLabeled satellite imagery of war zones is scarce and skewed, since most available examples show damage rather than intact land, which makes classifiers bad at recognizing what's fine. Better detection tools could help aid groups and researchers track crop losses and plan agricultural recovery in Ukraine, where farmland has been a direct casualty of the war.
