Endurance Energy, a Seattle-based startup, deployed its 3-ton prototype for three weeks. \"Net-positive\" means the plant generated more electricity than it consumed to run. The company is billing the result as the first demonstration of a subsea geothermal plant, and it shows the concept can work in the water.\n\nThe design leans on the setting. \"The deep ocean gives us unlimited cold seawater for cooling, and its weight keeps the system and the well pressurized, so our plants can be compact,\" said Andrew Redd, the company's founder and CEO, in an email. That is the company's own case, and the test was too short to confirm it.\n\nThe target customers are Pacific island nations and others looking for alternatives to importing expensive fossil fuels. That market makes sense on paper. Small islands often have volcanic geology and no domestic oil or gas, so a local heat source would matter more to them than to a grid with cheap fuel nearby.\n\nStill, less than 10 seconds is a proof of concept, not a power supply. Land-based geothermal already shows that heat from the earth can run a plant around the clock.
