That process generated 8,356 distinct risk scenarios, each labeled by severity and by whether the agent was automating a task outright or just augmenting a human doing it. The team validated the scenarios with 45 workers across 10 job roles plus an independent LLM judge, then folded the results into a 15-category taxonomy of workplace AI agent risks. In head-to-head comparisons, workers preferred the new taxonomy over a recent generative AI risk taxonomy 64% of the time.\n\nThe headline finding cuts against the industry's default pitch that augmentation - AI as copilot, not replacement - is the safe option. The study found augmentation still carries real risk to workers, mainly through skill erosion and fading oversight, while automation's risks land more on organizations. The single largest and most severe category, Erroneous Agent Actions, clusters right at the boundary where humans and agents hand off work to each other.\n\nThat's a useful correction to risk taxonomies that treat AI agent as one generic hazard.
