The suite had already passed the standard check: it correctly approved known-good code and correctly flagged known-broken code. But when the researchers deliberately broke the code in a specific way, by removing event-identity deduplication, the suite missed it entirely. After repairing the suite to twelve checks and freezing it, they handed it to an outside reviewer who built ten new bugs the suite's authors never saw, and the suite caught only five.\n\nThat is the real finding: a suite that looked complete under conventional validation only caught half of adversarial bugs, and the five it missed failed in two different ways that no pass or fail report could distinguish. Three bugs were never even triggered because no test fed the code an input that would expose them; two others corrupted internal state that none of the suite's checks could see. For an industry racing to put invariant suites and runtime monitors in charge of agent deployment decisions, that is a bigger problem than it sounds.\n\nMutation testing has been standard practice in traditional software engineering for over a decade, with tools like PITest built around exactly this kind of check, so the surprise here is less the finding itself and more that agent infrastructure testing has gone this long without it.","[\"ai-agents\",\"software-testing\",\"mutation-testing\",\"dev-tools\"]","2026-10-05T04:00:00.000Z","2026-10-05T18:45:19.317Z","2026-10-05T18:45:23.900Z","published",null,[24],{"id":25,"reviewer":26,"round":27,"reason":28,"status":29},"editor-r1","editor",1,"Fix the fragment closing sentence ('Which is the real lesson here - the suite didn't need to get smarter...') into a complete sentence — starting a sentence with 'Which' with no antecedent clause is a grammatical break; everything else (counts, figures, facts) checks out against the source.","resolved","ai",[32,33,34,35],"ai-agents","software-testing","mutation-testing","dev-tools",[37],{"name":38,"url":39},"arXiv cs.AI","https:\u002F\u002Farxiv.org\u002Fabs\u002F2610.02928",0,{"sections":42},[43,46,50,55,60,65,69,74,77,81,86,91,96,101],{"name":44,"slug":30,"count":45,"latest_published_at":18},"AI",6233,{"name":47,"slug":48,"count":49,"latest_published_at":18},"Security","security",868,{"name":51,"slug":52,"count":53,"latest_published_at":54},"Policy","policy",444,"2026-10-03T15:02:01.000Z",{"name":56,"slug":57,"count":58,"latest_published_at":59},"Deals","deals",323,"2026-10-04T13:00:00.000Z",{"name":61,"slug":62,"count":63,"latest_published_at":64},"Hardware","hardware",204,"2026-10-03T14:50:50.000Z",{"name":66,"slug":67,"count":68,"latest_published_at":18},"Science","science",177,{"name":70,"slug":71,"count":72,"latest_published_at":73},"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",158,"2026-10-03T03:21:12.000Z",{"name":75,"slug":35,"count":76,"latest_published_at":18},"Dev Tools",97,{"name":78,"slug":79,"count":76,"latest_published_at":80},"Software","software","2026-10-04T10:00:00.000Z",{"name":82,"slug":83,"count":84,"latest_published_at":85},"Startups","startups",92,"2026-10-04T14:36:25.000Z",{"name":87,"slug":88,"count":89,"latest_published_at":90},"Gaming","gaming",53,"2026-10-02T02:50:39.000Z",{"name":92,"slug":93,"count":94,"latest_published_at":95},"General","general",51,"2026-10-05T02:35:01.000Z",{"name":97,"slug":98,"count":99,"latest_published_at":100},"Reviews","reviews",32,"2026-10-02T18:00:00.000Z",{"name":102,"slug":103,"count":104,"latest_published_at":105},"How-To","how-to",7,"2026-10-01T09:00:00.000Z"]
