The guided group used the same AI platform as the unrestricted group but received explicit training on reasoning-focused prompts, stepwise hints, verification habits, and rules for ethical use. All quizzes and the final exam were taken without any AI or outside help, so researchers could separate independent learning from AI-assisted practice. Guided-access students showed a more learning-oriented pattern in their chatbot use, favoring reasoning over quick answers and requesting stepwise support, and later scored better on those unassisted quizzes, even though their AI-assisted practice scores were not consistently higher than the unrestricted group's.\n\nMost classroom AI policy debates still fixate on the access question: ban it, allow it, or wall it off during coursework. This study points to a narrower and more useful one, what rules and habits govern the interaction itself.
