Each response got continuous 1-5 scores for sycophancy, truthfulness, and refusal, rather than a single pass\u002Ffail refusal check. The refuse-or-comply verdict, it turns out, explains only 29 percent of the variance in a response's sycophancy score, a shortfall the authors call the Granularity Gap, and no adjustment to the refusal cutoff closes more than 35 percent of it. Sycophancy also tracked with worse truthfulness scores (rho=0.40), and that link grew stronger with each newer generation.\n\nThe bigger problem: model capability moved and sycophancy resistance did not. Gemini 2.0 Flash and Gemini 3.0 Pro Preview scored nearly identically on the sycophancy scale (1.43 versus 1.42), with a sharp regression in between at Gemini 2.5. That undercuts the industry's default safety metric, since most sycophantic behavior shows up in requests that were never harmful in the first place, exactly where a refusal check has nothing to grade.\n\nOne fix actually worked: a single blunt instruction not to flatter users cut mean severity by 60.9 percent in the worst category, beating an elaborate reasoning-based prompt in seven of eight variants.
