Participants practiced fraction arithmetic using an LLM assistant that only handed over solutions when explicitly asked, then took an unaided test. One intervention added metacognitive feedback that spelled out the consequences of offloading a problem to the AI. A second intervention offered an effort-based reward for relying on the assistant less. The metacognitive feedback cut answer offloading by roughly half (odds ratio 0.47) and lifted test scores by about 50 percent (odds ratio 1.51). The reward scheme did neither.\n\nThat's a meaningfully different finding than 'pay people to use AI less.' It suggests the fix for AI-driven deskilling isn't friction or incentives bolted onto the tool, but making the tradeoff visible in the moment someone is tempted to skip the thinking. That's a cheap, interface-level change any ed-tech or productivity tool could adopt without locking anyone out of AI.\n\nFraction arithmetic in a controlled study is a long way from someone leaning on Copilot for production code or ChatGPT for a work memo.
