The researchers structured training as a three-level curriculum, starting with passive shifts in the world around the model, moving to changes caused by the model's own actions, and finishing with long chains of these transitions strung together. They built a 108,000-example dataset, called LSI-108K, from simulated and real interactions to match each level. Training runs in two stages: standard supervised fine-tuning handles the first two levels, then a self-distillation step uses a teacher model with privileged step-by-step descriptions to coach the student through long, multi-step reasoning chains.

Most spatial-reasoning training today is built on static questions, like asking a model where an object sits relative to another in a single photo. That teaches attributes and relations, but not how a scene updates as a camera moves or an object gets picked up, which is exactly what robots, AR headsets, and any agent navigating a real room actually need. Spatial-Interactor's bet is that supervision should come from the transitions themselves, since a before-and-after pair is a more direct teacher than a still frame ever could be.

It is worth noting this is a benchmark result from an arXiv preprint, not a deployed system, and the gains are measured against other VLMs on spatial tests rather than in an actual robot or headset. Whether the approach holds up outside curated trajectories is the next question.","["ai research","vision-language models","spatial reasoning","robotics"]","2026-09-23T04:00:00.000Z","2026-09-23T05:07:36.967Z","2026-09-23T05:07:42.618Z","published",null,[],"ai",[26,27,28,29],"ai research","vision-language models","spatial reasoning","robotics",[31
arXiv cs.AI","https://arxiv.org/abs/2609.23038",0
37,40,44,49,54,59,63,68,73,78,83,88,93,98
"AI",4251
"Security","security",706
"Policy","policy",369,"2026-09-23T02:13:52.000Z
"Deals","deals",202,"2026-09-22T23:00:04.000Z
"Hardware","hardware",168,"2026-09-22T23:56:03.000Z
"Science","science",133
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",110,"2026-09-22T20:00:00.000Z
"Software","software",80,"2026-09-22T23:32:52.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",79,"2026-09-22T22:21:13.000Z
"Startups","startups",65,"2026-09-22T22:06:48.000Z
"Gaming","gaming",45,"2026-09-22T15:35:06.000Z
"General","general",43,"2026-09-21T23:48:56.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",27,"2026-09-22T13:00:00.000Z
"How-To","how-to",6,"2026-06-16T09:00:00.000Z"]
