SiMa.ai just picked up $150 million and a $1.45 billion valuation.
The edge-computing startup closed a Series C led by Fidelity and Amplify. SiMa.ai builds chips for what it calls physical AI, hardware designed to run machine learning models directly on devices like cameras, robots, and industrial sensors rather than in a data center. The new valuation puts the company solidly in unicorn territory. Investors are betting that demand for chips that handle AI inference on the device itself, not in the cloud, keeps growing.
That bet has plenty of competition. Qualcomm, Hailo, and Ambarella are all chasing the same edge-AI silicon market, and Nvidia has been pushing its own inference hardware down toward smaller devices. A $1.45 billion valuation says investors still think a startup can carve out a lane in that market, even with bigger, better-funded rivals crowding in.
Whether that lane stays open is the real question. Edge AI has already produced plenty of well-funded chip startups before the market consolidated around a handful of winners.
