The Seattle Times and Newsday are suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement.
The two publishers filed suit accusing both companies of using their journalism without permission. That makes the Seattle Times and Newsday the latest in a growing list of news organizations taking OpenAI and Microsoft to court over the same underlying claim: the companies used copyrighted reporting to build and run AI products without a license. Both papers name Microsoft alongside OpenAI, tying the software giant to a legal fight it can't distance itself from just by pointing at its partner. Neither company has commented publicly on the filings.
Every new plaintiff chips away at the argument that this is an isolated dispute rather than standard practice across the industry. With more publishers now lining up behind the same claim, it gets harder for OpenAI and Microsoft to treat each suit as a one-off nuisance rather than a pattern a court might eventually rule on.
At this point, tracking which news organizations haven't sued OpenAI is starting to be the more interesting story.
