San Diego County says AppLovin let explicit ads slip past parental controls and straight into kids' phones.
The county filed suit against AppLovin, a mobile advertising technology company, in San Diego Superior Court on Monday. The complaint, reported by Bloomberg, alleges AppLovin's ad-serving systems bypassed parental controls built into children's games and injected ads for adult dating services, alcohol, vaping products and graphic sexual content. Those ads allegedly ran directly inside games kids were playing on their own devices. AppLovin has not filed a public response to the complaint.
This isn't a complaint about tasteless marketing - it's a claim that the safety controls parents rely on simply didn't hold. Ad tech firms sell brand safety and age-gating as a feature to app stores and advertisers alike; a lawsuit alleging those gates failed for explicit content undercuts that pitch directly.
Expect this case to become the reference point the next time an ad network insists its targeting and filtering are airtight.
