Lin, Joyce Qu, Aditya Rajeev and Gururaj Saileshwar, disclosed an attack called GPUThor that hammers DRAM rows non-uniformly on Ampere-generation workstation GPUs: the RTX A4000, A4500, A5000 and A6000. By exploiting gaps in Target Row Refresh, the mitigation meant to catch repeated row activations, the technique delivers roughly 6.6 times the hammering intensity of prior attacks. With ECC disabled, it produced between 72,000 and 377,000 bit flips per gigabyte, putting GPU Rowhammer in the same range as the Blacksmith attack on CPU DDR4. The researchers say the exploit can turn an unprivileged CUDA program into a root shell on the host machine.

This is the third attack from the same research group in eighteen months, following GPUHammer and GPUBreach, and the first to survive ECC being switched on, the exact fix Nvidia has spent a year recommending. Even with ECC enabled, GPUThor still forces a GPU reset every two hours on an RTX A6000, which flags the card for RMA within a day. That's a real problem for shared GPU infrastructure, where cloud providers and multi-tenant workstations have leaned on ECC as the security boundary.

The team reported the flaw to Nvidia in April, then to Google, Microsoft and AWS, before going public. There is no CVE and no patch yet, and the proof-of-concept code isn't due until November, so treat this as a warning shot rather than an active crisis, for now.","["rowhammer","nvidia","gpu-security","ecc"]","2026-09-07T18:05:00.000Z","2026-09-07T19:05:39.335Z","2026-09-07T19:05:51.272Z","published",null,[],"security",[26,27,28,29],"rowhammer","nvidia","gpu-security","ecc",[31
TechRadar","https://www.techradar.com/pro/security/another-rowhammer-attack-has-been-detected-and-nvidia-workstation-gpus-are-firmly-in-the-firing-line",0
37,42,45,50,55,60,65,69,74,79,84,89,94,99
"AI","ai",3415,"2026-09-07T18:24:32.000Z
"Security",582
"Policy","policy",313,"2026-09-07T15:41:19.000Z
"Deals","deals",179,"2026-06-29T20:02:07.000Z
"Hardware","hardware",152,"2026-09-03T09:26:48.000Z
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",97,"2026-09-04T15:29:18.000Z
"Science","science","2026-09-07T19:00:00.000Z
"Software","software",73,"2026-08-18T07:51:50.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",69,"2026-08-18T04:00:00.000Z
"Startups","startups",54,"2026-09-04T23:36:14.000Z
"Gaming","gaming",41,"2026-07-09T04:00:00.000Z
"General","general",40,"2026-09-07T08:57:14.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",20,"2026-06-24T12:00:01.000Z
"How-To","how-to",6,"2026-06-16T09:00:00.000Z"]
