Rockstar Games is cashing in on Grand Theft Auto VI hype before the game is even out.
The official GTA VI merch collection went live on the Rockstar Store this week, and it spans the full range of fan spending power. A baseball cap and a Macca the Gator tee each run $29.99, a Vice City tote costs $39.99, and a refillable Zippo lighter etched with the game's logo costs the same. For $49.98, fans can grab a two-disc vinyl pressing of the in-game soundtrack, featuring 34 tracks from artists including Travis Scott, Yung Lean, and Morgan Wallen. At the top end sits the $399.99 Goodtime State Vice City Collection, a box set stacked with a Macca the Gator figure, branded Oakley sunglasses, a New Era snapback, and a souvenir map poster.
This is the anticipation economy at work. Rockstar is monetizing the wait for a game that still hasn't shipped, using merch to keep Vice City visible in players' feeds and closets while the release itself stays out of reach. It is a lower-risk way to extend a marketing cycle than another trailer, and it doubles as a read on how much goodwill, and money, fans still have for the franchise.
Four hundred dollars for sunglasses and a figurine tied to a game you cannot yet play is a steep bet on brand loyalty, and judging by the sellouts, it is already paying off.
