Joanna Stern ended a FaceTime call during testing because the back of the device got too hot. The Verge said it heats up during long camera use, especially with both displays on for Duo Preview, and that it gets \"hot enough to start noticeably lagging after a while.\" It also ran hot with third-party apps, particularly video apps and apps from Google. PetaPixel's unit warmed up during gaming, photo editing and other processor-heavy work, with the heat on the right side of the unfolded device. 9to5Mac said it runs \"a bit hotter\" than the iPhone 18 Pro without hurting performance. Gizmodo found no problem at all.\n\nThe measured tests are fewer. HTX Studio ran a 30-minute gaming test and recorded 46.5°C for the Duo, against 43.8°C for the iPhone 18 Pro and 43.2°C for the Pro Max. The Duo's frame rate was 20 percent lower, and its brightness fell from 300 nits to 185. HTX's results as described give no reason for the dimming. Phones often lower brightness to shed heat, but that is an assumption here, not something the test established.\n\nTom's Guide found the Duo spread heat evenly across the body, yet a few degrees hotter than the Galaxy Z Fold8. Mrwhosetheboss's 20-minute stress test found heat trapped inside when the phone was closed and performance below the iPhone 18 Pro Max, though he called the day-to-day gap not \"massively\" noticeable.\n\nApple's design moves heat away from the chip with a vapor chamber (a sealed plate that spreads heat), thinner than the iPhone 18 Pro's, plus a flexible graphite pipe in the hinge linking the two halves.\n\nOn temperature, the Duo ran hotter than both the iPhone 18 Pro and the Fold8 in these tests. The only case for it being steadier than the Fold8 is one benchmark: Tom's Guide's 3DMark stress score of 75.9 percent, against 72 percent for the Fold8 and 79 percent for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.","[\"iphone-duo\",\"thermals\",\"foldables\",\"reviews\"]","2026-10-21T22:05:15.000Z","2026-10-21T22:12:27.973Z","2026-10-21T22:12:28.249Z","published",null,[24],{"id":25,"reviewer":26,"round":27,"reason":28,"status":29},"editor-r1","editor",1,"The closing line says the Duo lands between the iPhone 18 Pro and the Galaxy Z Fold8, 'hotter than the former, steadier than the latter', but the source says Tom's Guide found it a few degrees hotter than the Fold8, so on heat it is hotter than both; fix this and say plainly that the 'steadier' claim rests only on the 3DMark score (75.9 vs 72 percent).
