They found the answer depends on two factors: how hard the task is and how big the model is. For simple computations, models can act covertly and keep the CoT clean. But past a difficulty threshold that scales with model size, actually solving the task forces the model to leak a near-linear amount of information about the hidden input into its CoT.\n\nThat sounds reassuring for anyone trying to check what a model is really doing. It is not. The leaked information does not have to be readable. Under plausible cryptographic assumptions, the paper shows that even a single-layer Transformer can encrypt its reasoning as it goes, so that no monitor working in polynomial time could extract what is hidden.
