They found a pattern: models heading toward the right answer tend to become confident early and stay confident, while models heading toward a wrong answer tend to ramble through long, unproductive reasoning with shakier confidence signals. CoDE-Stop uses that pattern to cut reasoning short once confidence stabilizes, and it requires no extra training or changes to the underlying model. Tested across multiple reasoning and science benchmarks and several models, it beat prior early-stopping methods on the accuracy-to-compute tradeoff, cutting total token usage by 25-50% compared to letting a model reason at full length.\n\nThe real cost problem with reasoning models has always been that they generate long chains of thought whether or not the extra thinking helps. This work suggests overthinking has a legible signature - unstable, wandering confidence - that can be caught cheaply and cut off before it burns more tokens.
