Earlier versions of this approach could only flag violations of narrow assumptions about the data, like whether new inputs still looked statistically similar to training data. WCTMs go further: they adapt automatically to mild shifts in incoming data, catch harmful shifts fast, and then diagnose the cause, distinguishing a concept shift, where the relationship between inputs and correct answers has changed, from an extreme covariate shift, where the model is simply seeing inputs unlike anything it trained on. The authors tested the method on real-world datasets and report better results than existing state-of-the-art monitoring baselines.\n\nMost production monitoring tools tell engineers that something changed and leave them to figure out what.
