Qualcomm wants your earbuds to think for themselves.
Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2, a chip built for earbuds, smart glasses, and other wearables. Its pitch is independence: devices built around it are meant to run AI features without staying tethered to a smartphone. That's a change from the current setup, where earbuds and glasses typically offload the heavy lifting to a paired phone. Qualcomm is betting that untethering wearables from phones is the next step for the category.
Phone tethering has been the biggest practical limit on AI wearables - battery, connectivity, and processing all get borrowed from whatever's in your pocket. Putting AI compute directly on the audio chip lets earbuds and glasses work as standalone devices, which matters for things like live translation or hands-free assistants where waiting on a phone link defeats the purpose. It also lets Qualcomm sell silicon into the wearable boom the same way it long ago cornered the smartphone chip market.
Whether "phone-optional" ends up meaning actually phone-free, or just a spec sheet claim until battery life catches up, is the part worth watching.
