The memo gave no headcount and did not say which departments are affected. Qualcomm had roughly 52,000 employees at the end of its 2025 fiscal year.

The financial backdrop is less flattering than the framing. In Q3 2026, revenue fell 4% from a year earlier and net income dropped 25%. The core handset business, whose customers include Apple, Xiaomi, and Samsung, saw revenue fall 20% as rising memory costs weigh on consumer electronics demand. Qualcomm reportedly booked $97 million in severance-related restructuring charges in the first nine months of the fiscal year. Its shares are up 1.5% in 2026, against almost 60% for the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index.

"Performance-based" is doing a lot of work. Cuts pegged to individual performance sound tidier than cuts pegged to a shrinking core business, but a company whose largest segment lost a fifth of its revenue is also reshaping what it needs. Without a number, outsiders cannot tell which story dominates.

The strategic answer is data centers and edge computing, meaning AI processing on devices rather than in distant server farms. Qualcomm unveiled its AI200 and AI250 inference accelerators, chips that run trained AI models instead of training them, in October 2025. The company said data center growth would offset lost revenue by fiscal 2027. That is its own projection, in a field where it has far less history than in phones.

It is also not alone. Meta announced plans to cut 8,000 jobs to fund AI infrastructure. Yet McKinsey and the SEMI Foundation estimate the US could be short up to 157,000 semiconductor workers by 2030, and 73% of chip companies report trouble filling engineering roles. Layoffs and shortages coexist because they hit different skills. The real test for Qualcomm is whether its cuts fall on phone-era roles or sweep up people it will need to build the data center business.","["qualcomm","layoffs","semiconductors","ai-infrastructure"]","2026-10-21T13:00:00.000Z","2026-10-21T14:33:39.508Z","2026-10-21T14:33:41.763Z","published",null,[],"hardware",[26,27,28,29],"qualcomm","layoffs","semiconductors","ai-infrastructure",[31
Tom's Hardware","https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/big-tech/qualcomm-to-cut-jobs-globally-in-performance-based-layoffs-ceo-says-move-will-build-stronger-performance-culture-as-company-pivots-to-ai-data-center-and-edge-products",0
37,42,47,52,57,61,66,71,76,81,85,90,95,100
"AI","ai",7051,"2026-10-21T14:20:15.000Z
"Security","security",1028,"2026-10-21T14:35:46.000Z
"Policy","policy",560,"2026-10-21T13:46:18.000Z
"Deals","deals",544,"2026-10-21T11:57:35.000Z
"Hardware",280,"2026-10-21T14:52:23.000Z
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",262,"2026-10-21T15:00:00.000Z
"Science","science",211,"2026-10-21T09:00:00.000Z
"Startups","startups",138,"2026-10-21T14:03:11.000Z
"Software","software",134,"2026-10-20T14:57:15.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",121
"General","general",92,"2026-10-21T13:34:37.000Z
"Gaming","gaming",84,"2026-10-21T02:56:30.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",38,"2026-10-20T12:00:00.000Z
"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
