The Pentagon has already swapped out Anthropic's AI models, and apparently nobody noticed.
Palantir chief technology officer Shyam Sankar said on CBS's Face the Nation that the replacement is complete and caused no operational impact. "It's already been replaced," Sankar said. The switch follows a dispute between Anthropic and the Pentagon over the company's safeguards on military uses of its AI. The Pentagon responded by labeling Anthropic a supply chain risk and halting use of its products.
That label matters more than the swap itself. Supply chain risk is the kind of term the Pentagon usually reserves for hardware it doesn't trust, not software it merely dislikes, and pinning it on a frontier AI lab shows how fast safety guardrails can turn into a procurement liability. For Anthropic, which has built its brand on being the safety-conscious alternative to rivals like OpenAI, losing a defense customer over those exact guardrails is an awkward data point.
Palantir, which builds software for the Pentagon, is naturally happy to say the gap got filled without a hiccup.
