OpenAI is committing $7.5 million to The Alignment Project, an independent organization focused on AI alignment research.
The lab framed the grant as support for global efforts to address AGI safety and security risks. Notably, this money goes to researchers outside OpenAI, not to its own safety team. The announcement names no specific deliverables, research questions, or timelines.
Alignment research, the technical problem of making sure advanced AI systems reliably do what humans want, has never attracted resources proportional to its stakes. Independent researchers, free from any single lab's commercial pressures, are better positioned to study risks those labs might prefer to minimize. Funding them externally creates at least some structural separation between funder and findings.
$7.5 million is a meaningful sum for an independent research group. Against the backdrop of OpenAI's $40 billion fundraise earlier this year, it is also a relatively modest one.
