OpenAI says Apple's trade-secret lawsuit against it is a problem Apple made for itself.
In a filing lodged late Monday in the US District Court in San Jose, OpenAI wrote that "this dispute is a mess of Apple's own making, and it is trying to blame everyone else," according to Reuters, which first reported the filing. The filing is OpenAI's response to a trade-secret complaint Apple brought against the company. Neither the filing nor the reporting on it specifies which trade secrets, products, or individuals are actually at issue.
That gap matters. Trade-secret fights between major tech companies are common, but they usually hinge on specifics - which files moved, which employees carried them, which code got reused. None of that has been made public here, which makes it hard to judge OpenAI's defense, or Apple's original claim, on the merits from outside the courtroom.
For now, the dispute is playing out in adjectives, not evidence. That should change once discovery starts.
