OpenAI shut down a Russia-linked influence operation that used its models to mass-produce social media comments.
OpenAI says it banned accounts tied to a previously unreported network it calls Bad Grammar. The operation used AI to generate comments in English and Russian, posted on Telegram. Topics ranged from the war in Ukraine to politics in Moldova, the Baltic states, and the United States. OpenAI does not name the specific actors behind the network beyond describing it as Russia-origin.
This is a small-scale operation, not a sprawling bot farm, but it shows how generative AI lowers the cost of writing convincing comments in multiple languages at once. That matters for platforms already struggling to catch coordinated inauthentic activity before an election cycle.
Call it artisanal propaganda: fewer accounts, better grammar, same old targets.
