Amazon picked an odd week to launch new Kindles: days before its own sale event starts.
Amazon just redesigned its entire Kindle lineup, and the timing lines up almost exactly with October Prime Day, which kicks off Oct. 6. But the new 2026 Kindles won't be part of the savings. Several of those devices are still preorder-only, and retailers rarely discount something they haven't finished shipping. The markdowns will instead land on the outgoing 2024 models, the ones Amazon needs off shelves to make room for the new hardware.
That's actually good news for anyone who doesn't care about having the newest reader. The bigger question is whether 2024 Kindles hit their old all-time lows, like $79.99 for the base model and $124.99 for the Paperwhite, given that Amazon raised prices on every Kindle in August 2026 because of an industry-wide memory chip shortage. There hasn't been a sale since that price hike, so nobody outside Amazon knows yet whether discounts will be calculated off the new, higher list prices or dip back to pre-hike territory.
Amazon is already previewing the pattern: bundle deals on 2024 models are live now, with savings up to $130. Think of it as a trailer for the main event. If the memory shortage really is squeezing margins the way Amazon's pricing suggests, don't expect Prime Big Deal Days to be as generous as past Kindle sales, even if the sticker numbers look similar.
