New York City is banning AI tools for students through eighth grade.
Mayor Mamdani announced the policy, saying he has not yet seen an unbiased study proving AI is beneficial for elementary and middle school students. The ban covers New York City public school students from kindergarten through eighth grade. High schoolers are not included in the restriction. Mamdani framed the decision as a lack of evidence rather than a specific harm, and did not cite any particular study or finding.
That framing matters. This isn't a crackdown over cheating or misinformation. It's a demand for proof of educational benefit before rollout, a higher bar than most school technology debates set. It also flips the usual approach to classroom tech, where new tools reach students first and research on whether they actually help arrives later, if at all.
Whether that standard holds once parents, vendors, and eventually those same eighth graders turn ninth is a separate question.
