New York City's public schools are shutting the door on generative AI, at least for a year, and at least for their youngest students.
The city's Department of Education has barred chatbots and other generative AI tools from classrooms for students in kindergarten through eighth grade for the coming school year. High schoolers are not covered by the restriction. The policy is framed as a pause rather than a permanent rule, with the ban set to last one school year.
A blanket ban is a blunter instrument than case-by-case teacher guidance, but it's also more honest about the constraints: writing nuanced AI rules for every elementary and middle school classroom, then enforcing them consistently, is hard. A year-long pause buys the district time to build real policy instead of leaving it to individual teachers to sort out on the fly.
AI tools move fast enough that whatever gets banned today may look outdated by the time this pause ends.
