Nvidia is buying Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, putting the internet's biggest hub for open-source AI models under the roof of the company that already dominates the chips those models run on.
Hugging Face has operated since 2016 as a kind of GitHub for AI: a place where developers post models, datasets, and tools for anyone to browse, download, and build on. That open, community-driven library made it the default starting point for AI projects far beyond any single lab's walled garden. Nvidia says it plans to scale the platform, strengthen its infrastructure, and expand access to AI for developers. Financial terms beyond the price tag were not disclosed in the announcement.
The deal matters because it hands Nvidia influence over both ends of the AI pipeline: the silicon that trains and runs models, and now the platform where a huge share of those models get published and discovered. A company that sells GPUs by the truckload gaining a stake in which models developers reach for first is worth watching, especially if Hugging Face's tooling starts to favor Nvidia hardware.
Open platforms have a way of losing some of their openness once a giant with its own commercial interests owns the front door - ask anyone who remembers GitHub before Microsoft.
