Nvidia is reportedly buying Hugging Face, the internet's biggest library of AI models, for $12.9 billion.
According to a report, Nvidia is moving forward on an acquisition of Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Hugging Face works something like GitHub, but for AI models instead of code: researchers and developers search the site for models, download them, fine-tune them into new variants, and upload those back for others to use. The deal would give Nvidia a deeper foothold across the AI development pipeline, not just the chips underneath it. No terms beyond the price have been reported.
Nvidia already sells the hardware nearly every major AI lab trains and runs its models on. Owning the place where those models get published and shared would let the company sit on both ends of that pipeline at once. That matters less for what Hugging Face itself earns and more for how it locks developers into Nvidia's ecosystem as the default path for building with AI.
Call it less diversification, more tightening a grip Nvidia already had.
