Nvidia has reportedly agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion.
The deal would bring the open-source AI hub under Nvidia's roof. Hugging Face has become the default place developers go to find, share, and run open-source models, functioning as something like an app store for AI. Folding it into Nvidia gives the chipmaker a foothold in that ecosystem and, per the report, a route back into the cloud business it has largely ceded to AWS, Google, and Microsoft.
The bigger story here is control. Nvidia already dominates the hardware that trains and runs AI models; owning the platform where those models are hosted and shared would extend that grip to distribution too. That's the kind of vertical integration regulators have grown wary of, and it recalls Nvidia's own blocked attempt to buy chip designer Arm in 2022.
Whether this deal clears antitrust review, or even gets a formal announcement, is still very much an open question.
