The market disagrees.

After weeks of rumors that Nvidia was halting RTX 5090 production to redirect chip capacity toward AI accelerators, senior VP Jeff Fisher reportedly told Taiwanese outlets 4Gamers and SJTV that the card has not been discontinued and will keep shipping, despite a constrained supply chain. He also repeated Nvidia's usual line that GeForce built the company Nvidia is today. But the claim doesn't hold up well under a basic retail check. The RTX 5090 is missing from Nvidia's own store and from Micro Center, Best Buy has none in stock, and the units available on Amazon and Newegg come from third-party and likely overseas sellers at $7,300 to $8,500 - more than four times the card's original list price, before tariffs.

This matters because it is the second straight denial from a GPU maker insisting its gaming lineup is fine while all the evidence points the other way. Intel has made similar claims about its delayed consumer GPU refresh, and AMD said last year it still wants to make "the best mainstream gaming GPUs on the market." None of the three has shipped a meaningful new gaming card recently, and all three keep posting bigger AI numbers each quarter.

When a company has to publicly insist its flagship product isn't dead, it usually means the product is, for practical purposes, already dead to the people who actually wanted to buy one.","["nvidia","rtx 5090","gpu shortage","gaming hardware"]","2026-10-17T14:38:18.000Z","2026-10-17T21:20:37.052Z","2026-10-17T21:20:42.772Z","published",null,[24,30
"editor-r1","editor",1,"The dek claims 'triple its list price' but the body implies a ~$2,000 list price against $8,500 street pricing, which is roughly 4x, not triple — fix the math so the dek, headline, and body figures reconcile.","resolved
"editor-r2",2,"The phrase 'roughly four times list, not three' is a leftover editorial artifact referencing a correction the reader never saw—strip it and just state the multiple cleanly.","hardware",[36,37,38,39],"nvidia","rtx 5090","gpu shortage","gaming hardware",[41
Tom's Hardware","https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/nvidia-reportedly-insists-the-rtx-5090-isnt-dead-despite-severe-shortages-and-removed-listings-at-multiple-retailers-flagship-gpu-is-missing-from-nvidias-store-and-commands-usd8-500-on-amazon",0
47,52,57,62,67,71,76,81,86,91,96,101,106,111
"AI","ai",7038,"2026-10-17T19:58:31.000Z
"Security","security",1001,"2026-10-17T22:20:00.000Z
"Policy","policy",538,"2026-10-17T19:38:12.000Z
"Deals","deals",521,"2026-10-17T07:00:00.000Z
"Hardware",260,"2026-10-17T19:55:36.000Z
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",235,"2026-10-16T23:36:26.000Z
"Science","science",202,"2026-10-16T11:00:53.000Z
"Startups","startups",133,"2026-10-14T19:51:34.000Z
"Software","software",128,"2026-10-14T22:23:48.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",116,"2026-10-13T16:20:18.000Z
"General","general",81,"2026-10-16T16:06:38.000Z
"Gaming","gaming",77,"2026-10-17T16:59:39.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",37,"2026-10-14T10:00:00.000Z
"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
