They asked Nvidia for written plans, and Nvidia has since asked for more data and site visits. Nvidia estimates the sites could together supply about 1 gigawatt of compute, enough for more than 2,200 Supermicro Vera Rubin NVL72 racks. Each rack holds 72 Rubin GPUs and 36 Vera CPUs, which works out to more than 158,000 GPUs.

The appeal is that telco buildings were built to carry data and voice traffic, and many already have the power supply. They are not plug-and-play, though. Nvidia would still need to add cooling and supporting equipment, and local permits would still apply. The source says approval would likely draw less red tape and opposition than a ground-up build.

Apollo has a reason to listen. It is involved in a $40 billion deal with SpaceX that would give it around 360,000 Vera Rubin GPUs. The Brightspeed sites would hold less than half that, but they could give some of those chips a home sooner. Who would own the chips in Brightspeed's buildings is unclear.

The design fits a shift in how AI gets run. One big cluster is still preferred for training models, but Nvidia has described smaller sites working together as an inference network, meaning a system for running finished models. That matters more as AI agents use five to 10 times more tokens than humans. OpenAI and Anthropic have both been considering similar setups as larger facilities face delays and community backlash.

The political backdrop is sharp. Americans overwhelmingly voted against data centers in the midterm elections, and more than 300 local bans have been enacted. Those bans have so far delayed only three existing projects, but the fear is that they will make new development harder. Reusing buildings that already look like infrastructure sidesteps part of that fight. Whether neighbors see a converted telco building as less objectionable than a new campus is the open question.","["nvidia","data-centers","brightspeed","ai-infrastructure"]","2026-11-06T12:45:00.000Z","2026-11-08T08:28:33.279Z","2026-11-08T08:28:33.511Z","published",null,[24
"editor-r1","editor",1,"The whole story rests on vague 'reportedly' and 'according to sources' attribution, so name The Information as the original reporter (via Tom's Hardware) in the lead or second paragraph; also soften the dek's 'shortcut around data center bans' framing, since the source only says these sites would likely face less red tape and opposition.","resolved","ai",[32,33,34,35],"nvidia","data-centers","brightspeed","ai-infrastructure",[37
Tom's Hardware","https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/data-centers/nvidia-wants-to-repurpose-over-130-old-telco-buildings-as-tiny-data-centers-report-claims-company-in-talks-with-brightspeed-after-pitching-idea-to-parent-company-apollo-global-management",0
43,47,52,57,62,67,72,77,82,87,92,97,102,107
"AI",7110,"2026-11-08T14:34:09.000Z
"Security","security",1099,"2026-11-08T15:24:01.000Z
"Deals","deals",620,"2026-11-08T08:00:00.000Z
"Policy","policy",604,"2026-11-07T15:48:26.000Z
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",336,"2026-11-08T21:00:00.000Z
"Hardware","hardware",316,"2026-11-08T14:36:39.000Z
"Science","science",222,"2026-11-07T16:19:17.000Z
"Software","software",154,"2026-11-08T15:42:52.000Z
"Startups","startups",150,"2026-11-06T16:50:01.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",125,"2026-11-06T22:15:59.000Z
"General","general",111,"2026-11-08T21:27:29.000Z
"Gaming","gaming",94,"2026-11-08T20:52:05.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",38,"2026-10-20T12:00:00.000Z
"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
