Nvidia is buying Hugging Face, the closest thing AI has to a GitHub, for $13 billion.
The deal turns Hugging Face's library of millions of models and datasets into part of Nvidia's empire, a year after Hugging Face turned down a smaller Nvidia investment at a $7 billion valuation to stay independent. Nvidia says the acquisition is meant to accelerate the spread of open-weight models, the AI systems whose underlying design is public and can be downloaded, tweaked, and run on a buyer's own hardware. That distinguishes them from proprietary models built by labs like OpenAI and Anthropic, which stay locked behind an API. Nvidia is now set to own the platform that decides how much of that open ecosystem gets distributed.
Nvidia already sells the chips nearly every AI lab depends on. Owning the place where those labs publish and download their models hands it a second chokepoint, this time over distribution rather than compute. For a company that built a $5.4 trillion valuation on being everyone's supplier, buying the supply hub itself is a logical next move, even if it complicates Nvidia's pitch that it merely arms the AI industry rather than running it.
