Nvidia just wrote MediaTek a $3.5 billion check, and it's not charity.
Nvidia is investing $3.5 billion in MediaTek, the Taiwanese chipmaker best known for smartphone processors. The deal comes as Nvidia's biggest customers, the same cloud giants that have powered its GPU boom, increasingly build their own AI chips instead of buying Nvidia's. Details on what MediaTek gets out of the arrangement, or exactly what the investment will fund, are thin so far. But the timing says plenty about where Nvidia thinks the next fight for AI infrastructure is heading.
For years, Nvidia's moat was simple: nobody else made GPUs good enough to train and run modern AI models at scale. That moat gets thinner every time a hyperscaler ships its own custom chip instead of buying Nvidia's. A $3.5 billion stake in another major chipmaker looks like a hedge, a way to stay financially embedded in AI hardware even if fewer companies build exclusively on Nvidia GPUs.
Call it insurance, not generosity. $3.5 billion is a small price to stay in every AI chip conversation that matters, including the ones happening without you.
