Nvidia, Anthropic, and OpenAI each spent more on federal lobbying from July through September than in any previous quarter, according to federal disclosures.
Nvidia spent the most at $2.2 million. Anthropic followed at $2.1 million, and OpenAI reported $1.5 million. Together that comes to $5.8 million in three months.
The records are real, but the scale is familiar. Microsoft has spent at least $2 million a quarter since 2021, and Google regularly clears $3 million, including this quarter. Measured against those long-established Washington operations, the AI firms are arriving at the level of incumbents, not past it. Nvidia and Anthropic now sit roughly where Microsoft's floor is. OpenAI is still below it.
The more interesting detail is the ordering. Anthropic, an AI lab, nearly matches Nvidia, a chip company whose products every lab depends on. That suggests policy is now a standing cost for model builders, not a side project. The disclosures cited here do not say which issues the money was aimed at, so the spending shows interest, not strategy.
The useful comparison is the trend, not the total. Microsoft and Google spent at these levels for years as a matter of routine. Three companies hitting their own peaks in the same quarter suggests the AI sector has stopped treating Washington as optional. Whether that buys influence is a separate question, and quarterly filings cannot answer it.
