The prize honors optogenetics, a technique that uses light-sensitive proteins to turn individual nerve cells on and off. Hegemann and Nagel's early work identified the light-sensitive proteins in algae that made the method possible. Deisseroth, who works at Stanford, helped turn that discovery into a tool labs around the world now use daily.\n\nThis isn't a prize for curing a disease. It's a prize for building the instrument that let thousands of other researchers study how brain circuits actually work, which neurons fire when, and what happens when you flip them off. That's a different kind of impact than a single breakthrough, but arguably a bigger one.\n\nIt's the same logic that won green fluorescent protein a Chemistry Nobel in 2008: reward the tool, and the discoveries it enables take care of themselves.","[\"optogenetics\",\"nobel-prize\",\"neuroscience\",\"research-tools\"]","2026-10-05T15:31:06.000Z","2026-10-06T08:04:08.613Z","2026-10-06T08:04:15.052Z","published",null,[],"science",[26,27,28,29],"optogenetics","nobel-prize","neuroscience","research-tools",[31],{"name":32,"url":33},"The Next Web","https:\u002F\u002Fthenextweb.com\u002Fnews\u002Fnobel-prize-medicine-2026-optogenetics",0,{"sections":36},[37,42,47,52,57,62,66,71,76,81,86,91,96,101],{"name":38,"slug":39,"count":40,"latest_published_at":41},"AI","ai",6336,"2026-10-05T19:16:35.000Z",{"name":43,"slug":44,"count":45,"latest_published_at":46},"Security","security",875,"2026-10-05T17:21:11.000Z",{"name":48,"slug":49,"count":50,"latest_published_at":51},"Policy","policy",455,"2026-10-05T18:15:20.000Z",{"name":53,"slug":54,"count":55,"latest_published_at":56},"Deals","deals",353,"2026-10-05T18:35:08.000Z",{"name":58,"slug":59,"count":60,"latest_published_at":61},"Hardware","hardware",209,"2026-10-05T15:55:29.000Z",{"name":63,"slug":24,"count":64,"latest_published_at":65},"Science",182,"2026-10-05T18:58:12.000Z",{"name":67,"slug":68,"count":69,"latest_published_at":70},"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",161,"2026-10-05T18:18:56.000Z",{"name":72,"slug":73,"count":74,"latest_published_at":75},"Software","software",103,"2026-10-05T18:23:19.000Z",{"name":77,"slug":78,"count":79,"latest_published_at":80},"Dev Tools","dev-tools",99,"2026-10-05T10:47:06.000Z",{"name":82,"slug":83,"count":84,"latest_published_at":85},"Startups","startups",94,"2026-10-05T18:07:07.000Z",{"name":87,"slug":88,"count":89,"latest_published_at":90},"Gaming","gaming",54,"2026-10-05T19:07:04.000Z",{"name":92,"slug":93,"count":94,"latest_published_at":95},"General","general",52,"2026-10-05T17:01:27.000Z",{"name":97,"slug":98,"count":99,"latest_published_at":100},"Reviews","reviews",33,"2026-10-05T11:57:17.000Z",{"name":102,"slug":103,"count":104,"latest_published_at":105},"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
