The team ran seven models from four architecture families through 300 word pairs pulled from established psycholinguistics research, scoring them with a Double-Pass Success Rate designed to weed out lucky guesses. Most models fell apart once they were also required to avoid any signal an outside observer could detect. One frontier model kept near-perfect accuracy anyway.\n\nThat matters because a lot of automated pipelines now feed one model's output straight into another model's input, with no human reading the middle step. If a model can hide a working signal from a detector built to catch it, the same channel can just as easily carry misdirection as cooperation, and the paper shows models can already be steered toward exactly that.
